Web Hosting Features & Services

9:08 PM | , , , , ,

With many different possibilities of web hosting companies on the internet, which one should you choose? The best way to choose is to analyze what type of features and services they offer. Knowing what some of these features and services are will help you narrow down your decision.

Disc Space
Disc Space, the more the better right? Not exactly having a lot of disc space is wonderful, but not necessary. A normal website might use 50 MB and a large website could use 2 GB. It really matters on how many pages and what type of multimedia files you are. Images, movies and flash application could take lots of disc space. Website page files don't take hardly any space. Try to think of what you might need to your website; remember to think down the road. Find a web hosting company that can provide you with a desired space and a reasonable price. Don't pay extra for space you don't need. There are lots of shared hosting companies that offer unlimited disc space. If you are looking into a dedicated server, this can be expensive. On a dedicated server you will pay for different amounts of disc space.

Bandwidth
How much traffic are you going to have a month? Lots, little, not sure? When looking for a web hosting plan watch for how much data you can transfer in a month. This could get very expensive if you go over the quota. A regular website won't have any problem going over the bandwidth quota. But keep in mind if your website expands. If your website has 20,000 unique visitors a month, you're going to need a large amount of bandwidth and could be costly. What type of multimedia files are you doing to have? If your website has lots of pictures, movies and/or flash, you could be using lots of bandwidth to stream.

Domain Names
Most web hosting companies will give you a free domain name if you sign up for their service. The trick here is to see how many domain names you can host on one account. Maybe you have a main webpage, but you want to have smaller branches that will require a unique domain name. Some web hosting companies will limit how many domain names you can host on one account. I think unlimited is a good number. I don't see why they should limit you to how many websites you can have on your account. If you have the disk space and the bandwidth, then there shouldn't be a problem. There are a couple of companies that will offer a Free Domain Name for Life. A domain name for life is that the hosting company will pay the renew fee for your domain when you are using their service. Web hosting features to look for in the domain department is add-on domains, parked domains and sub domains. These different domain names will help you keep things organized and could help with usability.

Email Accounts
Your own email account from your website can look very professional. Web hosting companies will have an easy way to create and access them. But how many can you have and how much space will they allow for them? Do a quick look at how many email accounts you can have and how much space they will allow.

MySQL
If you are planning to have databases, ecommerce store or a content management system you will most likely need MySQL. Double check the company will support it and the web language you will be working with. Most companies will put a number of databases you can have on your web hosting account.

Extra Features
Everyone likes extras, right? See what else the hosting company can offer you. Maybe your website wants a photo gallery, blog, discussion board, shopping cart, or connections to third party companies. This could be valuable source. Not only for cost, but also time. These web applications are easy and quick. If you don't have a strong web development background, this would be something to look into.

Support
Check their support options. See what hours they are available and how you can contact them. They should offer phone service and email service. Usually they will also have a live chat that can get you in and out. Web hosting support can be a headache of a lifesaver. If something goes down on your server or you mess something up. Getting quick and knowledgeable support can be priceless.

Other Stuff
Watch for what coding languages they offer, you never know what you might use or want to try. Give yourself the option to learn something new and expand what you know. If you know what coding language you are going to develop with. Look at what version they are offering. Make sure they are up to date, don't fall behind.

Domain Names and Web Hosting - Basics You Must Know

8:30 PM | , , ,

Internet address... Domain name... www dot something... There are probably no words in today's everyday life that are used more often that these. Internet has entered each and every aspect of our lives and is considered to be one of the biggest inventions of all times.

Still, how many people really understand the value of domain name; that part of internet address that follows www? Better yet, how many people HAVE Internet address with their own domain name? Do people realize that their domain name might be the biggest asset they actually have?

If you run a business, it's no news anymore that having an Internet address for customers to find you is an imperative. Having an Internet address with the business related domain name is almost necessary for online success. It's your ID in the online world.

And then there are personal web pages i.e. Internet addresses. With continuous growth of Internet, more and more people start their own personal web pages to share their personal interests, hobbies etc. They simply wish to mark their presence on the Internet and to do that easily they tend to personalize their domains.

The most common way of getting your own domain name is by getting it from a free web hosting provider. However, the risk of doing that is far greater than people think. What it comes down to is that you simply DO NOT OWN your web site / Internet address / domain name. In other words, if that free web hosting provider runs out of business, you LOSE EVERYTHING. Another big obstacle when choosing your own domain name is the fact that most of the TLDs names (top level domains such as .com, .org and .biz) are already taken.

Luckily, there's an alternative...
For almost a decade now, people are using the benefits of being a .ws domain owners. By registering with GDI (Global Domains International), one of the fastest growing INC 500 companies today, you get to see the true meaning of "value for money" principle. For $ 10,- per month you get to chose your own domain name, but more importantly - you get to OWN it, as well as your 10 pages web site, 10 email addresses, a web site builder and an email forwarding service.

If this still doesn't seam good enough to you, GDI offers all the above as an actual product for you to pass on i.e. to sell to other people as a GDI Affiliate. Should you choose that, there's an outstanding ongoing support system in place and incredible 5 levels affiliate commissions program. So, you have a safe and professional web hosting package on one side and a highly demanded product / service to earn from, on the other. If you're familiar with Affiliate business at all, you'll recognize the power of promoting a highly demanded product that requires no warehousing, but is instantly delivered.

All in all, with Internet being everybody's business today, GDI and its .ws are turning into and therefore rightfully being called A NEW .COM BOOM and the most reliable MLM system today.
So, do you have your own .Com domain yet?

Hard Disk Drive Video Players Hit The Mainstream

10:35 PM |

Introduction

External storage with DivX, XVid and DVD output.

DVD players can be found in almost every living room today, having long ago replaced VHS VCRs. Many of these players can even play back files encoded in DivX and MP3. But there's a big catch to using these formats, too: you have to squeeze the files onto a blank DVD so that you can stick them in the standalone player. And that in turn means that you have to have your own DVD burner and lots of blank DVDs.

One new alternative is the use of hard disk drive (HDD) players that are based on a 2.5" or 3.5" IDE (ATA) hard drive. These video players dispense completely with optical media; the files are transferred via USB 2.0 to the installed hard drive and played from it directly. The copy process takes about a minute per gigabyte; the files are then played back directly from the disk of the HDD player with the same ease as using DVD players, and of course, with the convenience of a remote control.

HDD players support a wide range of video and audio compression methods. Among the best-known are DivX, xVid and MP3. Unlike MPEG-2 (DVD), DivX-coded files are considerably smaller and thus take up less room. Thanks to constantly improving video code compression algorithms, DivX and the others are more than a match for their DVD counterparts. The latest functions of the DivX codec now even support menus and chapter selection, similar to what we're used to with DVDs. Unfortunately these menus are (still) not supported by the players. Thus, if you want to continue to use this convenience, you will have to switch to the DVD structure. The video_TS directory familiar to us from the DVD medium is accepted by HDD players. All functions such as chapters, subtitles, alternative languages or camera angles can be used just as with a standalone DVD player. It is only a matter of time until the boxes support these DivX codex functions, probably via a firmware update.

Players will refuse to play protected MP3 files downloaded from the Internet, such as I-Tunes files. The same goes for video download portals that offer DVD or AVI files. Files protected with digital rights management (DRM) always need online access, which HDD players don't have. Only after you get a release code can the DRM file be played back, for example on Microsoft Media Player. This received code, however, only applies to that one computer and cannot be transferred to the HDD player or any other computer.

Our three test candidates have gigantic amounts of storage. With a 500 GB hard drive, you could store roughly 10,000 minutes of video in MPEG-2. With DivX-compressed video files, that would in theory mean 60,000 minutes or almost 1,000 hours of video! Sounds great, doesn't it? And you don't have to cut any corners on quality. In the case of MP3 music files, that storage would amount to a guaranteed 3 months of uninterrupted playback!
